月雪花は一度に眺められぬ

Tsuki yuki hana wa ichido ni nagamerarenu.

The moon, snow, and flowers cannot all be viewed at the same time.

[To everything there is a season.]

The Japanese regard a fresh snowfall, a full moon, and pretty flowers as aesthetic experiences in themselves. This remark conveys a lesson about greed or craving everything at once, or just the recognition that one can’t have it all. Snow and flowers appear in different seasons, and flowers don’t open at night, when the moon is out.
